Lectureship in Turkish @ The Faculty of Humanities, Leiden University Institute for Area Studies

Leiden University invites applications for a fulltime position as Lecturer in Turkish. Appointment will be fixed-term from August 2015 through July 2017, with the possibility of extensions of up to four years, and of tenure thereafter. Requirements include an MA degree in teaching Turkish as a foreign language (TTFL) or equivalent, e.g. Second Language Acquisition / Foreign Language Pedagogy with specialization in Turkish; and native proficiency in Turkish. Proficiency in Ottoman Turkish, the ability to teach content courses in Middle-Eastern Studies (culture, history, linguistics, modern society, etc), and a PhD degree in a relevant field may be an advantage. Key responsibilities

• Teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels, in all modalities;
• A central role in curriculum development;
• Acquisition of external project funding;
• Co-supervision of BA and MA theses, and of PhD research, if applicable;
• Administrative duties;
• Representation of the field to external audiences and media.

 

Selection criteria

• An MA degree in teaching Turkish as a foreign language (TTFL) or equivalent, e.g. Applied Linguistics and Foreign Language Pedagogy / Second Language Acquisition with specialization in Turkish. The Lecturer will be expected to critically monitor and use developments in research on TTFL and language pedagogy at large;
• Native proficiency in Turkish. Proficiency in Ottoman Turkish may be an advantage;
• Commitment to and expertise in high-quality, multi-media, multi-mode teaching practice. Work experience at institutions located outside Turkey is an advantage;
• While the position has no research component, a PhD degree in a relevant field may be an advantage;
• While primary duties will lie in language acquisition classes, the ability to teach content courses in Middle-Eastern Studies (culture, history, linguistics, modern society, etc) may be an advantage;
• An excellent command of English. Most MA programs at Leiden University are taught in English, and English may be used in BA teaching as well. If the successful applicant is not Dutch-speaking, s/he is expected to acquire a good command of Dutch within two years from taking up duty, primarily for adminstrative purposes. LIAS will fund her/his enrolment in the University’s Academic Language Center;
• Upon appointment, depending on experience and formal qualifications to date, the lecturer may be required to enter a nationally standardized tertiary teaching skills certification trajectory (BKO or Basis Kwalificatie Onderwijs), successful completion of which is a condition for extensions and tenure.

The Lecturer will hold a position in the Leiden University Institute for Area Studies (LIAS). LIAS is committed to the integration of disciplinary and regional-historical perspectives, on a solid foundation of excellent language skills, and comprises a School of Asian Studies and a School of Middle-Eastern Studies. The Lecturer will teach in Middle-Eastern Studies, International Studies, and other programs and courses as required. There are excellent opportunities for synergy with lecturers in other languages.
Current staff in Middle-Eastern Studies have expertise in the fields of Anthropology, Archaeology, Art & Visual Studies, Economics, Film Studies, History, International Relations, Language Pedagogy, Law, Linguistics, Literature, Material Culture Studies, Performance Studies, Philology, Philosophy, Political Studies, and Religious Studies.

Terms and conditions

We offer a fixed-term position, from August 2015 through July 2017 with the possibility of extensions of up to four years, and of a permanent position thereafter. Leiden University is committed to diversity, inclusiveness, and equal opportunities.
The position has a salary range from € 3.259,- to € 4.462,- per month (pay scale 11), commensurate with qualifications, with additional holiday and end-of-year bonuses. Depending on qualifications, the appointee may start at the appropriate step in scale 10 until s/he fully meets the requirements for scale 11 as specified by the Faculty of Humanities, particularly with regard to teaching skills certification and the number of years of relevant work experience. Candidates from outside the Netherlands may be eligible for a substantial tax break.
