Sectarianism in the Middle East in an Age of Western Hegemony, 1860-1948

Ussama S. Makdisi
Professor of History Arab-American Educational Foundation Chair of Arab Studies
Rice University
The conventional view of sectarianism in the Middle East is that it reflects age-old, endemic religious tensions, and that it reflects a problem in the region's adaptation to a secular Western modernity. Sectarianism has often been depicted as a holdover of primordial religious divisions that make up the Middle East. In contrast, this talk suggests that the sectarian crisis in the Middle East has its roots in the nineteenth century Ottoman Empire crisis of religious pluralism that has important parallels in both Europe and the United States.

A New Book: Everywhere Taksim Sowing the Seeds for a New Turkey at Gezi

Edited by Isabel David and Kumru F. Toktamis

Universitt of Amsterdam Press - 2015

In May 2013, a small group of protesters made camp in Istanbul's Taksim Square, protesting the privatisation of what had long been a vibrant public space. When the police responded to the demonstration with brutality, the protests exploded in size and force, quickly becoming a massive statement of opposition to the Turkish regime. This book assembles a collection of field research, data, theoretical analyses, and cross-country comparisons to show the significance of the protests both within Turkey and throughout the world.

A NEW BOOK: Building Modern Turkey: State, Space, and Ideology in the Early Republic

by Zeynep Kezer

UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH PRESS - Dec 2015

"Building Modern Turkey" offers a critical account of how the built environment mediated Turkey s transition from a pluralistic (multiethnic and multireligious) empire into a modern, homogenized nation-state following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire at the end of World War I. Zeynep Kezer argues that the deliberate dismantling of ethnic and religious enclaves and the spatial practices that ensued were as integral to conjuring up a sense of national unity and facilitating the operations of a modern nation-state as were the creation of a new capital, Ankara, and other sites and services that embodied a new modern way of life. The book breaks new ground by examining both the creative and destructive forces at play in the making of modern Turkey and by addressing the overwhelming frictions during this profound transformation and their long-term consequences. By considering spatial transformations at different scales from the experience of the individual self in space to that of international geopolitical disputes Kezer also illuminates the concrete and performative dimensions of fortifying a political ideology, one that instills in the population a sense of membership in and allegiance to the nation above all competing loyalties and ensures its longevity."

MHP Kürt sorununu geri istiyor

MHP, koalisyon arayışlarının kilit partisi oldu ama tüm formüllere mesafeli.

CUMHURIYET - 12 TEMMUZ 2015

DEVAMINI OKUMKA ICIN....
